Asbestos Dangers When Renovating

DIY renovators have been warned of the dangers of asbestos in the wake of recent reality renovation TV shows such as The Renovators and The Block.

Renovating with Asbestos

Backed by asbestos campaigners, Senator Lisa Singh told Parliament:

“These shows have an obligation to tell people that asbestos can be found in fibro sheeting, water, drain and flue pipes.”

She along with others fear that the boom in renovating and the lack of appropriate warning could result in problems down the track:

“No one wants to see a spike in the diagnosis of asbestos-related disease in 20-plus years and have it attributed to the craze of DIY home renovation.

Senator Singh also believes that the renovation TV shows should use their position to help promote and highlight the dangers of working with asbestos:

“These shows have a captive audience, and high ratings, so why not be a good corporate citizen and do the right thing?”

It’s very difficult to argue with Senator Singh’s position.  Barry Robson, who is the president of the Asbestos Diseases Foundation, believes that it would be easy for the TV shows to do their part and provide warnings to budding DIY renovators who may not fully understand the risks that asbestos presents:

“Just put up a little warning – it won’t cost them anything.”

“The number of people who have been coming down with diseases is increasing.”

It does seem a little crazy that the producers of the shows haven’t already thought of adding these warnings themselves, but it appears that things are going to change quickly.  A spokesperson for Nine’s The Block said that changes are on the way:

“We understand the dangers are real. As a result we will address the safety issues and assist in educating the Australian public.”

The dangers of working with asbestos are very real, and all DIY renovators (and professional renovators for that matter) need to be aware of the correct procedures for working with this hazardous material.
